We follow the story of Assasi, a Syrian hip-hop artist who was forced to flee war-torn Aleppo, as he bounces around the Middle East and East Asia before finally ending up in the United States. Assasi’s story seems like something out of fiction — there’s war, jail time for promoting a hip hop show in Syria, homelessness in Lebanon, refugee detention camps in Malaysia, a half-baked plot to sneak across the border into India, isolation in Nepal, and finally being welcomed into the United States, where he found himself striving in vain to revive his music career in the backwoods of Maine.
